They drove for quite awhile before entering into a rich, suburban neighborhood. Star pressed her face closer to the glass for a better view. This wasn't her first trip into Houston, but it was her first trip into the residential side of it. She was amazed by the pure extravagance of the homes that lined the streets.

“This is our destination?”

From the front seat, the driver nodded. “Yes, ma'am, it is.”

“Could you tell me some about what I should expect?”As they drew closer to their destination, the butterflies in her stomach increased.

The driver didn't immediately respond. Instead, he slowed down on the nearly deserted road and carefully eased onto a cobblestone driveway. “I could,” he replied in a drawl, “but I think you'll enjoy it a lot more if I just show you.”

They pulled through the gates of the high fence and Star gasped. It wasn't like anything she'd expected. Instead of a club, it was a large magnificent estate, extremely private and secluded. Although there were houses around them, they were completely hidden by the carefully chosen trees and bushes. “This can't be right,” she muttered, completely in awe of the place they were pulling up to.

He chuckled before stopping and turning the car off. “I'll be right with you, miss, to open your door.”

Star sat back as she began to sweat. Whoever owned this, whatever this was, she was never going to fit in. There was no point even trying.

Her mind flashed back to the disastrous matchmaking event. The humiliation she'd experienced from the men's reaction to her was still very fresh. What had she been thinking? There wasn't anyone that would want her, even if it was backed by magic, which she had no doubt this was. How else could the invitation have appeared like it did?

Her hands ran down her legs nervously as she swallowed back the lump in her throat. The chauffeur opened the door, smiling at her as he stepped back to allow her out. She shook her head at him.

“I-I'm sorry,” Star stammered out, making no move to leave the seat. Her face was flushed, and her body sticky and hot. “I can't do this.”

He frowned at her in concern. “Why not, miss?”

She let out a sharp bark of laughter before looking away. “I just wouldn't fit in. I'm awfully sorry to have put you out like this. If you will drive me back, I'll reimburse your time.”

She didn't see the sad look he shot her, and she couldn't know that there had been a time when he knew exactly how she felt. A time when he'd been mocked and made fun of, each day bringing new faces but the same torment. Mercifully, a fairy had taken pity on him, and she had changed his life.

The same fairy would change hers, too, if the woman would just allow it. He could tell she was a kind and gentle soul. He was going to do all he could to help make it happen.

He leaned his arm against the open door, taking a moment to decide on the best approach.
